It’s never a good idea to base a blog post on an opening night experience. But for Fancy’s on Fifth, we’ll make an exception.
Earlier today, Mr Foodie forwarded me an al.com article about Fancy’s at exactly the same time as our trusted foodie friend Michelle (of Urban Pops post fame) texted me asking about when we should go try it. The only correct answer: tonight.We were lucky enough to be able to get there around 5:30p. It was already packed; we grabbed the very last table.

At the crossroads of Fifth Avenue South and 41st Street South, Avondale’s main street, an illuminated, iron octopus swims mid-air, twinkling among glowing Edison bulbs hanging from nautical rope. On the wall, machetes and samurai swords adorn a large palette of reclaimed wood that proudly reads “Fancy’s.” The rustic, exposed brick walls are juxtaposed by the understated elegance of a long, gleaming white marble bar that is equipped not only with bubbles, martinis and cold brews, but also with Magic 8 Balls, Rubik’s Cubes and Fortune Teller Miracle Fish. A neon purple octopus above the bar sends down a colorful glow.

Fancy's on 5th, a new oyster and burger bar from the owners of the Melt restaurant and food truck, is opening tonight at the corner of 41st Street and Fifth Avenue South in Avondale.
The restaurant's name is a tribute to "Miss Fancy," the elephant that was the star attraction at the old Avondale Park location of the Birmingham Zoo, and the menu features a selection of raw, baked and fried oysters, as well as seven different burgers and a variety of starters, salads and sides.
